What happens

Transfer to the mainland

Meet at the resort dock at 6:30 AM. Transfer to the mainland and drive into the Cayo District through jungle-covered mountains to the put-in point. A second vehicle drives to the exit point 7 miles downstream and waits.

Into the caves

Gear up with your kayak, helmet, and headlamp. Paddle into the jungle where the river disappears underground. Navigate through 9 different caves connected by stretches of open river. Stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal formations line every chamber.

Crystal Cave and waterfall

Dock your kayak and swim into the Crystal Cave, a chamber of sparkling formations reflected in still water. Further along, discover a hidden cave waterfall.

Lunch and return

Emerge from the final cave after 7 miles. Local Belizean lunch, then drive back and transfer to the resort. Back by approximately 6:00 PM.

Common questions

No. Your guide provides full instruction before you enter the water. The river current helps carry you through the caves. Tandem kayaks are available if you prefer to paddle with a partner.

Completely dark in some sections with only your headlamp. Between caves, you paddle through open jungle river in full daylight. If you are uncomfortable in total darkness or enclosed spaces, this may not be the right experience.

Moderate to high. You paddle for several hours over 7 miles, though the river current assists you. There are rest stops between caves. Families with teenagers have completed the full route.
