What happens

1

Flight to the mainland

Meet at the resort dock at 6:30 AM. Short transfer to San Pedro airstrip, then a 20-minute flight to Belize City. Your private guide and air-conditioned van are waiting.

2

Xunantunich

Cross the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry. Explore the ruins of this Maya ceremonial center with your guide. Climb El Castillo, a 130-foot pyramid with panoramic views stretching into Guatemala.

3

Cave tubing

Hike 30 to 45 minutes through the jungle to the cave entrance. Gear up with your inner tube and headlamp. Float through ancient limestone chambers past stalactites and crystal formations in caves the Maya believed led to the underworld. The float takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

4

Lunch and return

Local Belizean lunch, then drive back to Belize City for your return flight. Back at the resort by approximately 6:00 PM.

Common questions

The day begins with a 20-minute commuter flight from San Pedro to Belize City. From there, a private air-conditioned van takes you to both sites. The flight is short, scenic, and avoids the 90-minute water taxi crossing. Round-trip flights and all ground transport are included in the price.

No. You float on an inner tube the entire time and the river current carries you through the cave. The water is generally calm and waist to chest deep. Life vests are available. You do need to be comfortable in water and in dark enclosed spaces. The 30 to 45 minute jungle hike to the cave entrance is the more physically demanding part of the day.

Ages 8 and up are recommended. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The jungle hike is on uneven and sometimes slippery terrain, and the cave can feel dark and enclosed, which may be unsettling for very young children. Older kids and teenagers typically love it. Climbing El Castillo at Xunantunich is optional but the steep steps require caution with children.
