What happens

1

Briefing and departure

Meet at the resort dock. Your guide fits your snorkel gear, covers safety basics, and briefs you on what to expect in the water. Board the boat for a scenic 20 to 25 minute ride north along the coast of Ambergris Caye to Mexico Rocks.

2

Mexico Rocks

Slip into crystal-clear water just 8 to 12 feet deep. Massive boulder corals rise from the white sandy bottom, creating a maze of swim-throughs and overhangs. Your guide leads you through the formations, pointing out parrotfish, angelfish, snappers, butterflyfish, and groupers. Sea fans wave in the gentle current. Look under the coral heads for spiny lobster, moray eels, and octopus hiding in the crevices.

3

Turtles, rays, and sharks

The shallow protected waters attract sea turtles, nurse sharks, and spotted eagle rays. Your guide knows where they feed and rest. The water is calm and clear enough to spot them from the surface before you even dip your mask in.

4

Surface interval and return

Climb back on the boat for fresh fruit and cold water. Take in the coastline on the ride back. You are at the resort in time for lunch or your afternoon plans.

Common questions

Basic water comfort is recommended, but the water at Mexico Rocks is only 8 to 12 feet deep with very little current. Life vests are provided and your guide stays with the group at all times. Many first-time snorkelers choose Mexico Rocks for this reason.

Mexico Rocks is shallower (8 to 12 feet versus 20 to 30 feet at Hol Chan), calmer, and less crowded. It is part of the same Hol Chan Marine Reserve system (Zone G) but features patch reef coral heads instead of a reef channel. Hol Chan has stronger currents and includes Shark Ray Alley. Mexico Rocks is the better choice for beginners, families with young children, and anyone who prefers a more relaxed pace.

Mexico Rocks is home to sea turtles, nurse sharks, spotted eagle rays, parrotfish, angelfish, snappers, groupers, butterflyfish, spiny lobster, moray eels, and octopus. The coral formations include brain coral, staghorn coral, elkhorn coral, star coral, and colorful sea fans. The site is a protected marine reserve, so marine life is abundant and accustomed to snorkelers.
