What happens

1

Flight to the mainland

Meet at the resort dock at 6:30 AM. Fly 20 minutes to Belize City, then drive west to the Belize-Guatemala border. Your guide handles the border crossing. Continue into Guatemala's Petén region toward Tikal National Park.

2

Tikal

Enter the park through dense jungle. Your guide leads you through the Great Plaza flanked by Temple I (Temple of the Great Jaguar, 154 feet) and Temple II (Temple of the Masks, 125 feet). Explore the North Acropolis, the Lost World complex, and the ceremonial causeways connecting them. Howler monkeys roar from the canopy, spider monkeys swing between ceiba trees, toucans and coatimundis appear along the trails. Over 3,000 structures surround you, most still buried under jungle.

3

Temple IV

Climb the wooden staircase up Temple IV, 212 feet, the tallest pre-Columbian structure in the Americas. From the top, nothing but unbroken rainforest canopy in every direction with temple rooftops breaking through the trees. This is the shot George Lucas used as the rebel base Yavin 4 in Star Wars: A New Hope.

4

Lunch and return

Lunch near the park. Drive back to the border, cross into Belize, and drive to Belize City for your return flight. Back at the resort by approximately 6:00 PM.

Common questions

Fly 20 minutes from San Pedro to Belize City, then drive west to the Guatemala border and on to Tikal. All flights, transport, and border crossing are included. Passport required.

Scale. Tikal has over 3,000 structures across 222 square miles of protected jungle. Temple IV alone is taller than anything in Belize. It was a city of 100,000 people. Xunantunich and Lamanai are impressive but smaller sites.

Temple IV has a wooden staircase to the top (212 feet) and is the highlight. Temple II can also be climbed. Temple I is closed for preservation. The climbs are steep but manageable at your own pace.
