What happens
Early departure
Meet at the resort dock at 5:30 AM. Board the dive boat and head east into open ocean toward Lighthouse Reef Atoll. The ride is approximately 2.5 hours. Snacks and coffee on board. Your dive master briefs the group on all three dive sites during the crossing.
The Blue Hole, 130 feet
Arrive at the Great Blue Hole around 8:00 AM. From the surface you can see the turquoise rim of the sinkhole give way to deep dark blue. Gear up and enter the water with a giant stride. Descend along the sheer limestone wall past the shallow coral rim at 40 feet. At 90 feet, a thermocline drops the temperature and visibility becomes extraordinary. At 130 feet, enormous stalactites up to 40 feet long hang from the cavern ceiling, formations from the last ice age that have not been touched by air in over 10,000 years. Caribbean reef sharks and nurse sharks drift along the ledges. Approximately 12 to 25 minutes at depth, then a controlled ascent with a safety stop. Snorkelers explore the vibrant coral rim surrounding the sinkhole.
Half Moon Caye Wall, 60 feet
Motor to Half Moon Caye, a remote island 6 miles south of the Blue Hole. The wall dive starts at 35 to 40 feet and drops more than 3,000 feet into open ocean. Towering star coral, massive barrel sponges, yellow and neon blue sponges, black and purple sea fans, and hidden tunnels cut through the reef. Garden eels, parrotfish, barracuda, groupers, and southern rays along the wall. Approximately 45 minutes of bottom time. After the dive, come ashore on Half Moon Caye for a beach lunch prepared by the crew.
Long Caye and the return
The third dive at Long Caye starts in 15 to 20 feet of water along a wall scattered with gorgonian sea fans, colorful sponges, and reef sharks. A relaxed, shallower dive to end the day. Back on the boat for the 2.5 hour return to the resort, arriving around 6:00 PM. Cold drinks on the ride home.
