Meet at the resort dock at 5:30 AM. Board the boat and head east across open ocean toward Lighthouse Reef Atoll. The ride is approximately 2.5 hours. Coffee, snacks, and a sunrise over the Caribbean on the way. Your guide briefs the group on all three snorkel sites during the crossing.
The Blue Hole rim
Arrive at the Great Blue Hole around 8:00 AM. From the boat you can see the turquoise shallows give way to the deep dark blue of the sinkhole, over 400 feet straight down. Slip into the warm, crystal-clear water and snorkel the fringing coral reef that rings the entire sinkhole. Boulder corals, brain corals, sea fans, parrotfish, angelfish, snappers, and groupers in the shallows. Look down over the edge and see the blue fade to black beneath you. The reef is vibrant and healthy, protected as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Half Moon Caye
Motor to Half Moon Caye, a remote island 6 miles south of the Blue Hole. Snorkel along the top of one of the most celebrated reef walls in the Caribbean. The reef starts at 15 to 35 feet and drops more than 3,000 feet into open ocean below you. From the surface you can see massive star corals, barrel sponges, purple and black sea fans, and schools of fish along the wall edge. Sea turtles, southern rays, and reef sharks are common. After snorkeling, come ashore on Half Moon Caye for a beach lunch prepared by the crew on white sand under palm trees.
Long Caye and the return
The third snorkel stop at Long Caye is a relaxed drift along a shallow reef wall with gorgonian sea fans, colorful sponges, and tropical fish. A calm, easy snorkel to close the day. Back on the boat for the 2.5 hour return to the resort, arriving around 6:00 PM. Cold drinks on the ride home.
