What happens

1

0

Meet at the resort dock at 5:30 AM. Board the boat and head east across open ocean toward Lighthouse Reef Atoll. The ride is approximately 2.5 hours. Coffee, snacks, and a sunrise over the Caribbean on the way. Your guide briefs the group on all three snorkel sites during the crossing.

2

The Blue Hole rim

Arrive at the Great Blue Hole around 8:00 AM. From the boat you can see the turquoise shallows give way to the deep dark blue of the sinkhole, over 400 feet straight down. Slip into the warm, crystal-clear water and snorkel the fringing coral reef that rings the entire sinkhole. Boulder corals, brain corals, sea fans, parrotfish, angelfish, snappers, and groupers in the shallows. Look down over the edge and see the blue fade to black beneath you. The reef is vibrant and healthy, protected as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

3

Half Moon Caye

Motor to Half Moon Caye, a remote island 6 miles south of the Blue Hole. Snorkel along the top of one of the most celebrated reef walls in the Caribbean. The reef starts at 15 to 35 feet and drops more than 3,000 feet into open ocean below you. From the surface you can see massive star corals, barrel sponges, purple and black sea fans, and schools of fish along the wall edge. Sea turtles, southern rays, and reef sharks are common. After snorkeling, come ashore on Half Moon Caye for a beach lunch prepared by the crew on white sand under palm trees.

4

Long Caye and the return

The third snorkel stop at Long Caye is a relaxed drift along a shallow reef wall with gorgonian sea fans, colorful sponges, and tropical fish. A calm, easy snorkel to close the day. Back on the boat for the 2.5 hour return to the resort, arriving around 6:00 PM. Cold drinks on the ride home.

Common questions

Yes. Snorkelers join the same boat as the divers. You visit the same three sites at Lighthouse Reef Atoll and enjoy the same beach lunch on Half Moon Caye. While divers descend to 130 feet inside the Blue Hole, snorkelers explore the coral rim from the surface. At Half Moon Caye and Long Caye, snorkelers and divers are at the same sites. The stalactites and shark ledges deep inside the Blue Hole are only visible to divers.

You should be comfortable snorkeling in open water. Life vests are provided and your guide stays with the group at all times. At Half Moon Caye the reef drops to extreme depths below you, which can feel intimidating from the surface even though you are floating safely at the top. If you are a confident snorkeler who has done Hol Chan or Mexico Rocks, you will be comfortable here.

Yes. The reef at Lighthouse Reef Atoll is among the most pristine in the Caribbean, far less visited than the reefs closer to Ambergris Caye. The coral cover at Half Moon Caye and Long Caye is outstanding and fully visible from the surface. The beach lunch on a remote island is an experience in itself. What you miss is the stalactites inside the Blue Hole at 130 feet. What you gain is an entire day at one of the most beautiful and remote reef systems in the Western Hemisphere.
